Yesterday, after waiting for weeks, I finally received the Book! “Mastering manga” by Mark Crilley. I’ve opened it instantly and wanted to start drawing. On the first page he talks about the tools that you have to owe so you can draw like a pro (or close to one):
- Paper – a pad of smooth Bristol (I couldn’t find any at my local art store, so I use a plain A4 printing paper);
- Pencils – he’s using a No 2 (I’m using a HB);
- Pens – permanent-ink pen (I have my liners from back home, No. 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 – I use 0.3 for inking and the 0.6 for stronger lines);
- Ruler – clear plastic ruler (I had one, but it was from aluminum and not clear, obviously, so I bought one);
- Kneaded eraser – leave no dust behind them, good for erasing large areas (I had no idea about its existence! I bought one right away – it’s so cool!!);
- Pencil sharpeners – (I had couple of them already).
So after a quick visit to my local art store, I put my book to work. It’s a great book not only for learning how to draw manga style, but you can learn how to draw in general.
It’s showing you how to do it step by step and that’s amazing. You have plenty of reference material and it covers a large area of learning stuff: from faces to backgrounds.
I almost finished the first chapter. I can’t wait for the next one!
